We invite members of our scientific community to contribute to the proposed IUBS Declaration on AI and Biology, an initiative to examine the opportunities, limitations, and broader implications of artificial intelligence for the biological sciences.
While AI is advancing research in areas such as protein structure prediction, drug discovery, and biodiversity research, its environmental costs and wider implications for biology, biodiversity, and humankind also warrant careful consideration.
Building on the Leiden Declaration for Mathematics, this initiative aims to bring together perspectives from across the biological sciences to develop a balanced, evidence-based position on the role of AI in biology.
We encourage colleagues to share their expertise, experiences, and relevant references, particularly on:
- Areas of biology where AI can make significant contributions.
- The environmental costs of AI infrastructure, including data centres, taking into account regional and geographical contexts.
Deadline for contributions: 15 November 2026
Please send your responses to renee@iisc.ac.in, with a cc to nfomproix@iubs.org.
We encourage all interested colleagues to contribute to this important initiative.
