Main activities in 2024:
The BHBD programme has been continuously building the open data system through big data archive, curation, integration and analysis, providing a family of database resources to support global academic and industrial communities (https://ngdc.cncb.ac.cn). Over the past year, substantial efforts have been made toward encompassing a broad spectrum of multi-omics data, developing innovative resources and enhancing existing resources. Notably, new resources have been developed for single-cell omics (scTWAS Atlas), genome and variation (VDGE), health and disease (CVD Atlas, CPMKG, Immunosenescence Inventory, HemAtlas, Cyclicpepedia, IDeAS), biodiversity and biosynthesis (RefMetaPlant, MASH-Ocean) and research tools (CCLHunter).
We provide free, fast and convenient multi-omics data submission and archive services for users from all over the world. As of December 2024, the total omics data archived in the Genome Sequence Archive (GSA), a Global Core Biodata Resource selected by the Global Biodata Coalition, has exceeded 60 PB. Data submissions have been reported in over 4,300 articles covering 651 journals. The data submitters to our databases are from 40 countries/regions worldwide. For instance, the new BHBD member from Kazakhstan submitted 1,000 nucleotide sequences of SARS-CoV-2 to our GenBase database.
In October 2024, we held the 9th Big Data Forum for Life and Health Sciences & The 21st Asian Bioinformatics Consortium Symposium in Beijing, involving over 200 researchers from 8 countries. We also participated a number of events to promote the programme. For example, Prof. Yiming Bao attended The Sixth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity, organized by IUBS at COP16 of CBD in Columbia on October 27, 2024, and gave a presentation in the session “A scientists’ view on Digital Sequence Information and Access and Benefit Sharing”.
Taken together, all these activities have promoted knowledge exchanges and sharing on biodiversity and health among global researchers, increased the influence of IUBS and BHBD, and expanded networks for international collaborations.
Presentations of the programme at meetings/conferences/workshops
- The 2024 Annual Meeting of INSDC, June 6, 2024, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
- The 13th National Conference on Bioinformatics and Systems Biology of China, October 9-12, 2024, Haikou, China.
- Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16), October 26-November 1, 2024, Cali, Columbia.
Development of partnership:
In 2024, we have put more efforts to expand international network and promote scientific cooperation. It is delighted that 7 new regular members from Hungary, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Senegal and Serbia joined BHBD this year. As of December 2024, 35 organization members from 17 countries have joined the BHBD Alliance, covering Asia, Europe, South America and Africa.

Main activities in 2023:
The BHBD programme has been continuously building the open data system through big data archive, curation, integration and analysis, providing a family of database resources to support global academic and industrial communities (https://ngdc.cncb.ac.cn). Over the past year, significant efforts have been dedicated to integrating diverse omics data, synthesizing expanding knowledge, developing new resources, and upgrading major existing resources. Particularly, several database resources are newly developed for the biodiversity of protists (P10K), bacteria (NTM-DB, MPA) as well as plant (PPGR, SoyOmics, PlantPan) and disease/trait association (CROST, HervD Atlas, HALL, MACdb, BioKA, RePoS, PGG.SV, NAFLDkb)
We provide free, fast and convenient multi-omics data submission and archive services for users from all over the world. As of December 2023, the total omics data archived in the Genome Sequence Archive (GSA) has exceeded 40 PB. GSA has been selected as a Global Core Biodata Resource by the Global Biodata Coalition. Data submissions have been reported in over 3,000 articles covering 572 journals. The Resource for Coronavirus 2019 (RCoV19) has archived over 17 million SARS-CoV-2 sequences, providing services for over 4 million visitors from 182 countries/regions worldwide, with total downloads over 19 billion sequences.
In 2023, we held the 8th Big Data Forum for Life and Health Sciences in Beijing, involving over 200 researchers from 9 countries. We also participated a number of events to promote the programme. In paritcular, the BHBD Alliance received a new round of funding from ANSO (RMB 300,000, 2023-2026).
Taken together, all these activities have promoted knowledge exchanges and sharing on biodiversity and health among global researchers, increased the influence of IUBS and BHBD, and expanded networks for international collaborations.
Outcome on education:
We have established an education website providing a series of educational materials.
