IUBS acknowledges that women have long been disadvantaged in their pursuit of Bioscience. The establishment of our first Gender Working Group, with a mandate to address any inequities based upon gender, is testament to our strategic objectives to rectify the imbalance.

About

Background

The Working Group on Gender Equality was established at the General Assembly in Oslo in July 2019. Following a plenary session on Inclusive Co-operation: The International Science Council, Inter-union Co-operation and “Vision through a Gender Lens” co-chaired by John Buckeridge and Lucilla Spini, two resolutions have been adopted by the IUBS members:

  • To establish a gender gap working group in IUBS with a team of at least one female and one male member.
  • That the IUBS Nominations Committee actively promote the nomination of women for IUBS executive positions through National/Ordinary and Scientific member bodies.

Mission and Objectives

The WGGE’s primary objective is to ensure that there is a fair gender representation in all activities conducted by the Union. The IUBS policy is regularly reviewed and new propositions are made to the Executive Committee (see IUBS policy).

The goals of the WGGE are to better understand scientific career pathways and any impediments to the advancement of women within them.

  • We will investigate any discipline specific barriers that have prevented women from reaching their full potential in biological sciences.
  • We will seek to determine the best systems and protocols that IUBS and its members can implement to redress this gender imbalance.
  • In junction with IUBS regular activities, we will promote events that empower women .

The WGGE participated to the writing of the MoU “Gender Equality in Science” signed by 9 partners. Our objective is to interact with other partners on the Gender Equality issues and to participate together in specific projects.

IUBS Policy
