Role of CITES in reducing risk of future zoonotic disease emergence associated with international wildlife trade

As a member of the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade, IUBS co-signed a CITIES Information document.

This Information document relates to the agenda item (#17) on zoonoses and wildlife trade and the role of CITES in this context. Link to the document here.

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species. CITES was drafted as a result of a resolution adopted in 1963 at a meeting of members of IUCN (The World Conservation Union). More information on CITIES here.
