Description of the session

As climate change exacerbates threats to biodiversity, solutions for one or the other are envisaged as mutually positive (co-benefits). For instance, research on understanding the interactions and complex feedbacks between climate, biodiversity and humans may help to predict some outcomes for potential solutions and prevent negative impacts on human quality of life.

Several perspectives could be integrated to address biodiversity and climate change challenges together. Nature and ecosystem-based solutions for adaptation and mitigation are the more frequently evocated, but there are other approaches including risk control management practices or mitigation and adaptation activities that support biodiversity and enhance local and indigenous people. 

Several aspects should be taken into consideration when applying approaches to cope with biodiversity and climate change: Contribution and rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, different value systems; whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, National circumstances, priorities and capabilities; collective effort towards the targets, the right to development; a human rights-based approach, gender, fulfilment of the three objectives of the Convention and its Protocols and their balanced implementation, Consistency with international agreements or instruments, Science and innovation, intergenerational equity, access to finance, among others.
