DESCRIPTION:The SCGES Webinar Series is a regular event organized by its Partner Institutions and coordinated by the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science. It highlights various topics of interest around the focus tasks of the Committee. The initiative was launched in 2022. If we are to contribute popularising mathematics among the youth of all origins and gender\, we must address the issue of which image of mathematicians we aim at showcasing. Geniuses\, mostly white men\, winning prizes and medals for their outstanding results? Or a more accessible and more balanced world of mathematics\, made of diverse people cooperating\, of different backgrounds and making their way in a wide variety of manners? The alternative seems easy to settle. Let us talk about it!\nLéa Griton\, associate professor at Sorbonne University (Paris\, France) and researcher in astrophysics at Paris Observatoire PSL\nWriting a pop science astronomy book for everyone: questions I asked myself & answers I gave to others\nWhen Léa was solicited by Quanto/EPFL Press to write a book about scientific exploration of the Solar System\, the first thing that came to her mind was: why should I write a book? Writing a book is very time-consuming and\, as a young (mum and) scientist\, time is something rare and precious. However\, she also thought that\, when she was a teenager herself\, reading books about science helped a lot in deciding to pursue scientific studies. Moreover\, most of the popular science books she could read were written by men\, for instance Hubert Reeves or Jean-Pierre Luminet. She accepted to write the book as a challenge: how to write an astronomy book for men and women? why is it important? How organisms may cope with this distortion in chemical signalling and whether there is redundancy built into chemical signalling is not at all understood. This field offers exciting challenges and problems that need urgent solution\, whether it be in crop pollination\, pest control\, soil fertility through mycorrhizal networks\, or aboveground–belowground feedback leading to plant productivity changes. Processes that influence planetary health in natural ecosystems are equally likely to be affected by urban and industrial run-off of atmospheric\, terrestrial and aquatic pollutants. DESCRIPTION:Fifth Science-policy Forum For Biodiversity And\n\n\n8th International Conference on Sustainability Science\n\n\nContributions from science to implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework Concept note\n\n\n11 December – 12 December\, 2022 \nThe purpose of the fifth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity and the eighth International Conference on Sustainability Science is to provide space for scientists\, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders the opportunity to discuss and make recommendations on how science\, technology and innovation can contribute to the effective implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. \nParticipants will share experiences\, exchange knowledge\, ideas and diverse perspectives\, showcase innovative solutions and tools for addressing technical issues and facilitating the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Please use the link below to register for this event: \nhttps://bit.ly/100IUBS-YvonLeMaho \nYouTube link: https://youtu.be/ZSEhekiSNCk\n\nThere is no registration fee to attend the webinar.  \n  \n \nYvon Le Maho\, a well-known ecophysiologist\, has pioneered RadioFrequencyIDentification and robotics to investigate penguins in their natural environment while minimising human disturbance in fieldwork and therefore avoiding subsequent scientific biases. Among those physiological mechanisms that were discovered by his team\, a major finding is the demonstration that male king penguins are able to preserve food for 2-3 weeks at 37°C in their stomach\, which allows them to feed the newly hatched chick if the female has been delayed. An antibiotic molecule is involved\, which appears of biomedical interest. Yvon Le Maho is an author/co-author of more than 300 scientific papers\, including 12 in Nature magazine and specialized Nature journals. \nRegistration here \n

DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD2022) was officially inaugurated with an opening conference 30 June – 1 July 2022 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. DESCRIPTION:The 8th International Conference on Sustainability Science (ICSS 2022) is going to be held online from 18 January – to 20 January 2022. The event aims as ‘Biodiversity as a source of solutions to sustainability challenges in urban\, peri-urban and rural areas. \nThe Conference will facilitate creative discussions between academics\, policy-makers\, and practitioners on how biodiversity-based solutions can contribute to sustainable development.
