DAB 2014 Achievements


DAB 2014 is planned to hold one international symposium in Japan in order to fulfill intended purpose of the DAB. The symposium is planned to be held at Tohoku University early September. It is followed by a local excursion to Tohoku area.  The symposium consists of one day symposium open to the public, and one day round table discussion by selected professionals and NGO members, etc.
BDNJ supplies additional budgets for inviting either international or domestic speakers, and part of the logistics.

International Symposium “Disaster and Biodiversity” opened on 6 September, 2014 at Katahira Campus, Tohoku University for four days, including a field excursion to Fukushima on 9 September.

- Conference, Workshop organised:

Workshop “International Workshop on Disaster and Biodiversity, IUBS Triennial Program, Workshop 2”. Chuo University, Korakuen Campus, on 28 January, 2014,

The international symposium “Disaster and Biodiversity” was held at Katahira Campus of Tohoku University from 6 to 8 September, 2014, followed by a field excursion to the coastline of northern Fukushima on 9 September.

- Development of partnership :
   Organizations of varying fields have supported the symposium:
       International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
      Japan Association of Botanical Gardens (JABG)
      Center for Ecological Adaptability, Tohoku University (CEATU)
      Ministry of Environment of Japan
      IUBS Committee of Science Council of Japan
In the symposium gathered scholars, citizens, professionals and NGO members who are interested in DAB. The cooperating NGO, BDNJ, is one of most active NGOs concerning biodiversity in Japan, as well as an IUCN NGO member. Good organizational and individual partnerships have been established since DAB 2013 workshops. Further worldwide recognition and interests on DAB are expected after publishing an official report of DAB as an IUBS Journal issue in 2015.
The International symposium could expand the DAB project with a worldwide scope. The Ministry of Environment of Japan keeps paying attention to the program.
